    inspiration, the next level...

This month's theme is 'The next level inspiration', and we'll be discussing what type of inspiration spurs on your creativity, both in your creating and your performance and how we can push it to the next level.

Stephanie Sounds is an East-London born songstress with the voice of an Angel scarred by life’s harsh realities…. A daughter of the first family of UK Gospel, Stephanie began singing with Europe’s famous London Community Gospel Choir from the tender age of 9 under the watchful eye of her father Rev Bazil Meade. She began providing backing vocals for some of the world’s leading artists, from Celine Dion and Will Young to Jessie J, Blur, Florence and The Machine and Kasabian. Also touring extensively with Daniel Bedingfield and his chart-topping sister Natasha Bedingfield, Lemar, Jamelia, Westlife and Mcfly. It was her time with dance outfit Faithless that she holds as her dearest though, opening her appetite for real diverse musicality and expression.

When the stars need a session musician, Ayo Oyerinde is the man they have on speed-dial. Raised in Hackney, East London, Ayo’s talent was evident from early days mixing UK garage with school friends, but it’s his flair for the piano and keyboards that has fired him to the top of the session world over the last 16 years. Ayo’s soulful touch and adaptable style have seen him work with major artists including Jessie J, Tinie Tempah, Rebecca Ferguson and The spice girls and while each gig requires him to master a new genre and recreate a different album, Ayo rises to the challenge. No wonder his nickname is ‘Ayce’. He is also running his own Record label Ayce has released his own soulful has music to critical acclaim and also is releasing shortly the debut album from the first artist signed to the label in early 2013.

Dora 'the drawer' Lam is a Hackney based visual artist, inspired by abstract expressionism, jazz and improvisation, she captures music performances live on canvas.

If you spot Dora the Drawer at a London show, paintbrush in hand, patiently waiting for inspiration, it’s a confirmation that you’ve picked a good show to come to. Dora’s taste in live music is mirrored by her ear and eye for expression. As a live painter, she begins and completes canvasses during live sets.

Artists are fans of her work as much as she is a fan of theirs. Dora’s paintings have been photographed with Nubya Garcia and Sons of Kemet to Ginger Baker and Christian Mcbride, amongst many others. She exhibits some online, but often they’re snapped up by an audience member who’s fallen for her work there and then.

    Chima Anya

creative honesty - the currency for connection!

This month's theme is Creative Honesty - we'll be discussing honesty in your creativity and how it's the connector to your value, your audience and motivation.

Though you may not be immediately familiar with the name, it’s likely you’ve come across Chima Anya if you have even a vague interest in Hiphop Music. You may have seen him as the front man in the recent Orchestral renditions of classic hiphop albums - a phenomenon that dominated the London live scene for 2017/2018. Or you may have seen him as a special guest on ITV’s new hiphop comedy panel show “Don’t hate the playaz”. You may have heard his music on National radio or streamed it unknowingly in some of Spotify’s official playlists. You may even be one of his patients - as he still works as a medical Doctor.

This wide range of experiences means Dr Anya is an artist that is hard to put in a box. A completely unique style of hiphop that is both progressively alternative with strong traditional foundations. Organic, soulful and jazzy with subtle electronic undertones. A true lyricist who distils the lyricism and infuses it with a higher level of musicality.

    Silas Giron

    Who? Me and my authenticity

    - we're discussing how to stay authentic both in your creative work but also in how you interact with your surroundings - on and off line.

    Artist of the Month:

Popular music is one of the greatest riches of Bahian culture. From the voice and guitar of Dorival Caymmi to the songs of Tropicália, through the swing of afoxés, samba-reggae and other rhythms, the identity of Bahia is revealed in the eyes of the world. It is, among our other cultural goods, the product that reaches all classes and ages, rescuing and reinventing our traditions. In it our creativity shows all its strength and beauty. It was not by chance that the samba de roda of the Recôncavo Baiano was declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco.

It is from these musical and conceptual references that the work of the composer, performer and guitarist from Bahia, Silas Giron, is inserted. His music is in tune with the noblest tradition of the popular song in Bahia, which comes from Dorival Caymmi, including João Gilberto, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Roberto Mendes, among many others. He seeks to cross references traditional and contemporary Bahian and Brazilian music in general in his work. His songs seek to give continuity to the permanent search for our cultural identity, whether through rhythms or through letters. Under the influence of the tropicalists, samba-reggae, bossa nova, samba and pop music, Silas's musical work is driven by the ideal of dialogue and new syntheses in popular music.

Erika is the first unsigned artist to have released a VR app. Last year she released her very own Onna VR App, which digital wizards who happen to be fans of her music gifted to her. Which is available for all smart phones for free. Touring 2/3 times a year around Europe and UK tours. In true DIY all her shows are booked by her fans, from vineyards to people’s living rooms, to choux pastry cafes to theatres.

ERIKA is a huge fan of connectivity and interaction. Every show has always had interactive moments. Whether that be a a dress made of a type of velcro would be designed every night by the crowd. With the finale being a belt that attached to one hundred and twenty people spanning ten metres; OR throwing a giant pompom out from stage which triggers sounds making the audience member part of the band made by avant-garde sound artist, Sam Topley. Expect more fun antics for this new release.

Sonia Benarab has lived in three different countries which makes her feel like she is a fusion of a lot of different cultures, traditions, landscapes and mindsets. That being said, a lot of people are confused or infused by her atypical background. Born in Tunisia, grew up in Switzerland and now based in London where she found herself as a passionate Film Director.

Always looking to create (e)motions with sensitivity and veracity, her shorts films transpire with harsh truths and spiritual enlightenment. Sonia’s complex and rich backgrounds makes her work very diverse and artistic.

Currently working on a highly controversial independent short film, Sonia Benarab is sharing the story of a Middle Eastern crossdresser who lives in the Bahrain desert, a fiction based on true events.

We curate events, exhibitions and festivals that support emerging artists from the Arab World and their diasporas in bringing their work to new audiences in the UK and beyond. We work with UK-based educational, non-profit, arts and outreach organisations to facilitate the exchange of art and ideas across social and geographical boundaries. Many artists from the Arab World face almost insurmountable difficulties in creating and displaying their work, and our projects provide a platform for them to gain exposure while also bringing enjoyable and enriching experiences to our audiences.

    Juliana Yazbeck

Can you create a movement with your creativity....

Due to the upcoming election we're discussing if you can create a movement with your creativity? Can you get decision makers attention, change the mindset of people in an industry, get a community started or engaged.

Her mixed cultural background influences her music: lyrics in English and Arabic tackle gender issues, displacement, identity, racial inequality, war-and-peace, fusing Arabic aural traditions with soul and hiphop poetry.

Juliana is known for “stunning her audience into silence”, creating a contrast between the political nature of her lyrics and the transcendent humanness of connecting with a live audience.
